Do not build a dashboard until the numbers mean the same thing

A dashboard should not make confusion look official. First agree what the numbers mean and who acts on them.

Charts can dress up a disagreement

Dashboards feel authoritative even when the model underneath is unstable. If sales, operations, finance, and management define the same number differently, the dashboard becomes a cleaner-looking argument.

Definitions before screens

Before layout, decide what each metric means, where it comes from, how often it updates, what gets excluded, and who owns it. This sounds slow until it saves months of distrust.

Connect numbers to decisions

A useful report should change behavior. If the number drops, who acts? If it rises, what changes? If it is missing, who fixes the source? Reporting should make the next move clearer.

The ACS approach

We start with operational questions, then connect sources, define metrics, add checks, and design the dashboard. A calm dashboard starts with a clean model.
